Public Health Interests:

Women’s health promotion, healthy pregnancies and prevention of low birth weight infants

Current Public-Health Related Activities:

Most recently, my leadership in women’s health nursing has resulted in a community collaborative research partnership and has influenced Dr. Rich, UPHS Chief Nursing Officer, to support the expansion of the scope of institutional nursing practice to include health promotion for childbearing women in the West Philadelphia community.  To address these childbearing women’s health disparities, especially the high rate of preterm birth, a community collaborative research partnership was formed with the West Philadelphia Community women, HUP Women’s Health Department and the SON.  This partnership provides the foundation for a comprehensive approach to health care prevention strategies ensuring that interventions are evidence-based, sustainable, and reach intended at risk women. After determining health learning needs using a focus group methodology, structures and processes were established to provide health promotion education within the community. Structures established included 3 forums: 1) Community Advisory board consisting of West Philadelphia women 2) HUP nursing board consisting of HUP employees and 3) SON Healthy in Philadelphia forum consisting of key stake holders from the community, HUP and SON.  Processes included soliciting funding for culturally, environmentally appropriate health promotion education module development by student nurses, HUP nurses and community women focused on learning needs identified during the focus groups in conjunction with the West Philadelphia morbidity and mortality indicators. Between September 2008 to June 2009, health promotion outcomes included Women’s Shelter and faith based community partnerships, 15 health fares including a community baby shower reaching 50-1000 residents/event with 2-65 nurses and 6-15 student nurse educators/event.
